City and Guilds in Sound Engineering, Stages 1-3
The Sound Engineering Course is very much what it says it is – a sound based course (unlike the music based courses also run). Music is certainly an important part of the course though you will spend much time focussing on the scientific aspects of sound, as well as the more creative aspects.
This includes:

  • Basic Introductory Mathematics
  • Sound Propagation
  • Transducer (Microphone/Loudspeaker) construction
  • Acoustics
  • Electronics
  • Microphone techniques
  • Mixing Console Operation
  • Health and Safety

Each stage lasts one academic year, of about 6 hours per week. There is no requirement to enrol on all 3 years, you will get a City and Guilds certificate on successful completion of each stage.

If you are aged 18 or under, you may be able to qualify for full course funding from the college as long as you are able to undertake other courses at the college (sound/music based or otherwise), up to a minimum of 15 hours per week. If you are over 18, or do not wish to attend other courses, contact us for course prices.

Entry Requirements: An interest in science and sound and a grade D at GSCE mathematics or equivalent evidence of mathematical knowledge. You do not need to be a musician to undertake this course.

A Levels: (Please note that A Level courses are open only to 6th form members of the college, AGED 16-19).

A Level Music Technology
Unlike the Sound Engineering course, the Music Tech course is more music based, with less scientific principles and more creative principles. You will learn about recording techniques in the studio, understanding of computer based recording techniques such as Adobe Audition, Acid and Sonar software, microphone techniques, theory of music and musical styles.
